γ-Tocopherol is a type of vitamin E. It is found in the human body, where it functions as an antioxidant that protects cell membranes from oxidative damage. γ-Tocopherol has been shown to have clinical benefits in degenerative diseases and has been studied for its effects on mitochondrial function and chronic pulmonary disease. The reaction mechanism for γ-tocopherol is similar to that of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). In addition, γ-tocopherol may be able to reduce cancer risk by inhibiting the growth of tumor cells and inducing apoptosis. γ-Tocopherol can also be used as an extraction compound during solid phase microextraction when studying human serum or other types of biological fluids.
