3,3',4,4'-Tetrachlorobiphenyl is a model system for the study of lipid-soluble contaminants. It has been shown to induce fatty acid peroxidation and increase the activities of hepatic enzymes in rat liver microsomes. 3,3',4,4'-Tetrachlorobiphenyl also causes oxidative changes in the liver cells of CD-1 mice. The compound has been shown to inhibit dopamine-beta-hydroxylase activity and to increase the transcription rate of nuclear DNA polymerase. 3,3',4,4'-Tetrachlorobiphenyl is carcinogenic and may cause tumorigenesis by binding to nuclear dna or by acting as a mutagen.>>END>>
