Turpentine is a liquid obtained by the distillation of resin from various coniferous trees. It has been used in traditional medicine as a remedy for a wide variety of ailments, including skin conditions and respiratory problems. Turpentine is an α1-acid glycoprotein that belongs to the class of fatty acids. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The hydroxyl group on turpentine reacts with the hydrogen peroxide in solution, forming water and anion radical scavenging (ROO). This reaction can be reversed if there is sufficient oxygen present in the solution. Turpentine also has permeability properties that make it useful for treating wounds. The oleanonic acid found in turpentine may be responsible for its biological properties.
