Product Information

Name:
Tetrabenzylzirconium
Controlled Product
Description:

Tetrabenzylzirconium is a hydrocarbon solvent that can be used for the preparation of organic compounds. It is prepared by reacting benzene with zirconium tetrachloride and an acid catalyst in a two-step process. The first step involves the formation of benzyl chloride by reaction with chlorine, followed by the formation of an intermediate compound (tetraarylbenzene) by reaction with hydrogen chloride. Tetrabenzylzirconium has been shown to form coordination complexes with magnesium salts or chelate ligands such as phosphines and ethylene diamine. This complexing agent is activated by exposure to air, which converts it into a zirconium-containing chelate ligand that is suitable for use in gel permeation chromatography.
