WKYMVM is a dextran sulfate that has been shown to inhibit locomotor activity in mice. It is also an inhibitor of the receptor activity in the small intestine and colon. WKYMVM has been shown to be effective at treating bowel disease, but it is not as potent as other pharmacological agents. There are a number of possible mechanisms for this effect, including its ability to bind to bacterial cells and kill them through osmotic lysis or its ability to disrupt cell membranes. WKYMVM has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects on hl-60 cells by inhibiting the production of inflammatory mediators such as sesquiterpene lactones and antimicrobial peptides. It also blocks the release of histamine from mast cells, which causes allergic reactions, and inhibits the proliferation of T lymphocytes that are involved in autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis.
