Terbuthylazine is a chemical compound that has been shown to inhibit the metabolism of plants. It is a member of the class of phenylpiperazines, which are biologically active compounds that have been shown to be toxic to animals and humans. Terbuthylazine has been found to interfere with locomotor activity in rats and has also been shown to cause liver damage in mice. Terbuthylazine has also been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria, including E. coli and Salmonella sp., by interfering with cellular respiration due to its ability to inhibit mitochondrial function. There are no known toxicological studies available for terbuthylazine in humans, but it has been found to cause high levels of mortality in fish populations at certain levels. Terbuthylazine is also used as a model organism for studying cell membrane transport mechanisms and plant metabolite production pathways.
