Tetrahydro-11-deoxy cortisol (THDOC) is a synthetic corticosteroid that is used in the treatment of proliferative diabetic retinopathy. It has been shown to reduce the severity of retinal neovascularization in experimental models. THDOC has a hydroxyl group at position 11 and a double bond between C-11 and C-12, which are not present in natural cortisol. The body mass index (BMI) of women with high values for THDOC is correlated with the prevalence of adrenocortical carcinoma. This correlation suggests that THDOC may be useful as a diagnostic marker for this type of cancer.
