Tin(II) pyrophosphate is an inorganic salt that has been used as a radionuclide for cardiac imaging and as a stable complex to study enzyme activities. Tin(II) pyrophosphate has also been used as a diagnostic agent for the detection of congestive heart failure and myocardial infarcts. The cardiodiagnostic properties of tin(II) pyrophosphate are due to its ability to generate free radicals when exposed to hydrochloric acid, which react with gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), forming a stable complex. This reaction can be detected by electron spin resonance spectroscopy, indicating the presence of damaged myocardium or an infarction.
