• Description: Tonalide is a benzalkonium chloride-based quaternary ammonium compound that is used for the treatment of microbial infections. It has been shown to have enzyme activities, including acetylcholinesterase, catalase, and cytochrome P450 reductase. Tonalide also inhibits mitochondrial membrane potential and exhibits coumarin derivatives toxicity in rat liver cells. Tonalide may be used as an antimicrobial agent in wastewater treatment systems to prevent microbial growth. Tonalide is not toxic to fish or aquatic invertebrates at environmentally relevant concentrations.
