Tributylphosphine oxide is a diagnostic agent that has been used to detect and measure the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in the diagnosis of HIV. Tributylphosphine oxide can be used as a reagent for the detection of DNA in clinical samples. It is also able to inhibit enzymes, such as fatty acid synthase, that are necessary for cell growth. Tributylphosphine oxide has been shown to have low potency but works synergistically with other compounds to increase its effectiveness.
