Product Information
- 2-Phenylhydracrylic acid3-Hydroxy-2-phenylpropionic acidDL-Tropic acid
Tropic acid is a fatty acid that can be synthesized by adding a hydroxyl group to the carboxylic acid group of malonic acid. The hydroxyl group can be added through the use of hydrogen in an acidic solution, which creates a hydroxyl ion and a hydrogen ion. Hydrogen ions are able to break down the hydrogen bonds in malonic acid, while the hydroxyl ions react with water to form water molecules and create an alkaline environment. Tropic acid has been used as a pharmaceutical preparation for human urine samples, as well as an analytical method to measure benzalkonium chloride levels in human serum. Its optimum pH level is 7-9, and it has x-ray crystal structures available for viewing at 2.5A resolution.
