Thiamine disulfide is a sulfa drug that inhibits bacterial growth by reacting with the fatty acid component of the cell membrane. It has been used to treat infectious and inflammatory diseases, such as tuberculosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Thiamine disulfide also prevents protein synthesis in bacteria by reacting with the carbonyl group in the enzyme thiamin pyrophosphate to form an intermediate product, which then reacts with sulfhydryl groups on proteins to form adducts. This inhibition of protein synthesis leads to cell death. The biological properties of thiamine disulfide are similar to those of pyridoxine hydrochloride and sodium citrate, which are also found in food products.
