Toltrazuril is an antiprotozoal agent that belongs to the group of sodium salts. It can be used to control coccidiosis in chickens and other poultry. Toltrazuril is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and excreted unchanged in urine, with a half-life of about 3 hours. The drug has minimal toxicity for mammals, including humans. Toltrazuril is not toxic at doses up to 10 times the recommended dose in rats, although it did show some effect on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements in this species. This drug also showed no harmful effects on antibody response or diarrhoea when given to rats as a chemotherapeutic treatment for breast cancer. Toltrazuril was less effective than chloroquine or metronidazole at preventing diarrhoea caused by chemotherapy, but it was more effective than either drug at preventing antibody response against the tumour cells (an indication of successful chemotherapy).
