N-Tris(hydroxymethyl)methyl-2-aminoethanesulfonic acid (THAMESA) is a chemical compound that belongs to the group of amino acids. It is an amphoteric molecule, which means that it can react with both acids and bases. THAMESA forms a monomeric ion pair with metal ions in solution and has a high water permeability. The wild-type strain of yeast cells was found to contain THAMESA at a concentration of 0.025% by weight. It has been shown to be toxic in vitro, but this toxicity may be due to its ability to form metal chelate complexes that are toxic for cells.
