1,3,3-Trimethyl-2-(formylmethylene)indoline is an endogenous compound that has been shown to be cytotoxic to cells in culture. 1,3,3-Trimethyl-2-(formylmethylene)indoline can bind to cell membranes and alters membrane potential through the inhibition of ion channels. It also inhibits oxidation reactions in the presence of acid catalysts. This molecule can be used as a fluorescent probe for tissue imaging due to its ability to bind with high affinity to nucleic acids and proteins.
