It is particularly useful in the synthesis of 2-chloropropane from chloropropane and sodium chloride in a reaction solution containing water vapor and hydrogen fluoride. Trichloroacetyl chloride has been shown to be an effective antimicrobial agent against a number of bacterial strains, including Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This compound also has antibacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Streptococcus pneumoniae.
