Triphenyl methyl bromide (TPMB) is a reactive, cationic polymerization agent that can be used in analytical chemistry to measure the concentration of trifluoroacetic acid. TPMB reacts with hydroxyl groups on polymers and other surfaces to form esters, which are detectable with NMR spectroscopy. The redox potentials of TPMB are also known. TPMB has been shown to induce neuronal death by increasing the intracellular concentrations of Ca2+ ions and inhibiting mitochondrial respiration. It is also an inhibitor of fatty acid synthase, but not lipoxygenase.
