2-(Trifluoromethyl)benzimidazole (TFB) is a synthetic trifluoromethyl-substituted benzimidazole. It has been shown to have potent tuberculostatic activity and is effective against a wide range of protozoan parasites, including Leishmania, Trichomonas vaginalis, and Giardia lamblia. TFB binds to the target molecule by forming hydrogen bonds with the amino acid side chains on the enzyme's surface. TFB inhibits energy metabolism in cancer cells and causes them to undergo apoptosis through activation of caspase-3. The diploid rat liver cell line HepG2 was used for in vivo studies that showed that TFB inhibits ethylene diamine deaminase activity, which is required for the synthesis of purines and pyrimidines from ethylene diamine.
