Tetramethyl succinonitrile (TMN) is a reactive chemical that can be used to produce a variety of pharmaceuticals. TMN binds to the toll-like receptor (TLR) and has been shown to inhibit syncytial virus infection in mice. The TLR recognizes pathogen-associated molecular patterns, which are molecules on the surface of bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms that trigger an immune response. TMN has also been shown to have hypoglycemic effects in mice. This effect may be due to its ability to bind with the receptor activity of ethylene diamine, which regulates glucose metabolism by influencing insulin secretion from pancreatic β cells. TMN is not toxic to rats at doses up to 2000 mg/kg body weight (bw), and it does not cause any changes in blood pressure or heart rate when administered at doses up to 1000 mg/kg bw.
