Beta-(2-thienyl)-L-alanine is a hydroxylase inhibitor that binds to the regulatory domain of the enzyme and prevents it from binding to its substrate. It also has been shown to have blood pressure lowering effects. Beta-(2-thienyl)-L-alanine is an analog of L-Tryptophan, which is synthesized by hydroxylation. The reaction catalyzed by beta-(2-thienyl)-L-alanine hydroxylase involves a ternary complex with an activated hydroxyl group, which is generated from NADPH and oxygen in a reaction catalyzed by the enzyme. This product can be used in bolus doses because it's active form, 2-hydroxybeta-(2-thienyl)L-alanine, is rapidly hydrolyzed in vivo to form L-Tryptophan, which is then converted into serotonin or melatonin.
