Thymol is a naturally occurring phenolic compound that exhibits strong anti-fungal properties. It is an effective agent against human pathogenic fungi and synergizes with benzalkonium chloride. Thymol has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the growth of oral pathogens, such as Candida albicans, by binding to the DNA and interfering with transcription. Thymol also has a synergic effect against human pathogenic fungi when combined with benzalkonium chloride. This compound is not acutely toxic and can be used as a control method for other compounds that are cytotoxic or mutagenic in nature.
