It is synthesized from 1,3-thiazol-2-amine and benzaldehyde by dehydrogenative condensation. The ligand binds with metal ions via its thionyl group. The metal ion coordinates with the chloride anion and the ligand to produce a planar geometry. This process also produces a distillate that contains phenylbutazone as a major product.
