Tridecafluoroheptanoic acid is a trifluoroacetic acid that has been used as a solvent for hydrogen fluoride, which can also be used in vitro to study the effects of trifluoroacetic acid on bacteria. TFA is toxic to human serum and sodium salts, and is metabolized by the liver into tridecanoic acid. Tridecanoic acid can inhibit cholesterol synthesis, leading to lipid disorders. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its ability to bind with proteins in the body. The toxicity of TFA has been studied extensively in vitro and in vivo; it is not carcinogenic or mutagenic.
