2,3,4-Trihydroxydiphenylmethane (THDM) is a compound that is able to scavenge free radicals. It inhibits α-amylase activity in the pancreas and may prevent or delay the onset of diabetes. THDM also has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic properties. In addition, it can be used as a synthetic precursor for the production of other compounds, such as resorcinols and benzyl ethers. The yields of these products are increased when THDM is used as an intermediate. This product can react with amines to form amides and condense with alcohols to form esters.
