2,3',4,4'-Tetrahydroxybenzophenone is a naturally occurring compound that has been used in sunscreens for over 30 years. It is a potent scavenger of hydrogen peroxide and also inhibits the formation of reactive oxygen species by acting as an antioxidant. 2,3',4,4'-Tetrahydroxybenzophenone has been shown to have cytotoxic effects on cancer cells and fibroblast cells. In addition, this compound can induce cell death in certain cancer cell lines at high doses. The UV-absorbing properties of 2,3',4,4'-tetrahydroxybenzophenone make it suitable for use in sunscreens for human and animal use.
