Tetraamylammonium iodide is a drug that inhibits the potassium channel, which is activated by the flow of sodium ions. This inhibition prevents the flow of potassium ions, leading to a decrease in the membrane potential and an increase in the concentration of sodium ions in the extracellular fluid. Tetraamylammonium iodide has been shown to be reactive with basic proteins and dextran sulfate, which are often found in biological samples. It also can react with nitrogen atoms present in drugs such as cefazolin, leading to decreased chemical stability.
Tetraamylammonium iodide is used as a fluorescence probe for ATP-sensitive potassium channels (KATP). It reacts with ATP-sensitive KATP channels by binding to their α subunit. The reaction solution then becomes fluorescent when it is illuminated with light at 340 nm wavelength. Tetraamylammonium iodide can also be used for titration calorimetry and sample
