3,4,5-Trifluorophenol is a perfluorinated aromatic compound that reacts with copper oxide to form copper trifluoromethylphenolate. The reaction mechanism for this process is still unclear, but it may involve proton transfer from the alcohol group to the copper oxide. 3,4,5-Trifluorophenol also inhibits mek1/2 and impairs bacterial cell wall synthesis. This broad-spectrum antimicrobial has been shown to be effective against a range of bacteria including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is not active against fungi or viruses. 3,4,5-Trifluorophenol has several impurities that can lead to its degradation in the environment and could affect its activity as an antimicrobial agent.
