Tetrahydrocorticosterone is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands that regulates the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. It also has other biological effects such as inhibition of cyclase activity and production of malonic acid. Tetrahydrocorticosterone can be used to measure cortisol concentration in blood serum or urine samples. The detection sensitivity for this compound is 5-10 ng/mL. This hormone is found in high concentrations in adrenocortical carcinoma, which may be due to its ability to inhibit cyclase activity. Tetrahydrocorticosterone has been shown to have an effect on glomerular filtration rate and body mass index, which may be due to its ability to promote protein synthesis.
