Thiacetazone is a topical antimicrobial agent that inhibits the growth of microorganisms by altering the mitochondrial membrane potential. It has been shown to inhibit the production of reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation, which are important factors in the development of toxic epidermal necrolysis and other skin disorders. Thiacetazone has also been shown to have antimicrobial activity against bacteria, fungi, and viruses. This drug is used as an ingredient in combination preparations for the treatment of infectious diseases, such as HIV infection. Thiacetazone is active against resistant mutants with a body mass index (BMI) greater than or equal to 25 kg/m2.
