Theaflavin-3-O-gallate is a flavonol glycoside that has been shown to inhibit the activity of enzymes, including fatty acid synthase, and cancer cells. Theaflavin-3-O-gallate has been found in black tea and is believed to be responsible for the anti-cancer properties of this beverage. It also inhibits the activity of sodium-dependent glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2), which transports sugar from blood into cells. Theaflavin-3-O-gallate has also been found in other types of tea, such as green tea and oolong tea, but at lower concentrations than in black tea. This compound may be responsible for some of the physiological activities associated with these beverages.
