Taraxasterol is a sesquiterpene lactone that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. It can be found in the plant Asteraceae, which includes herbs such as dandelion and burdock. Taraxasterol acetate, a synthetic form of taraxasterol, was used in an experiment to determine its effects on bowel disease and inflammation. In this study, it was found that the compound had an effect on disease activity and the inflammatory response in mice with bowel disease. The researchers showed that taraxasterol acetate inhibited the production of proinflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6 by inhibiting toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) activation. Taraxasterol also inhibits the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are generated during oxidative injury. This inhibition protects cells from oxidative damage caused by ROS.
