Taxifolin 3-O-rhamnoside is a polyphenol that belongs to the class of caffeic acids. It is an effective inhibitor of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and has been shown to be active against bowel disease. Taxifolin 3-O-rhamnoside binds to the DNA template strand, preventing the extension of DNA. This binding leads to apoptosis or programmed cell death by activating the mitochondrial pathway and inhibiting the synthesis of proteins such as Bcl-2. The matrix effect is an important factor in determining the efficacy of taxifolin 3-O-rhamnoside. Matrix effect may manifest itself in two ways: either by affecting the solubility and bioavailability of taxifolin 3-O-rhamnoside or by altering its interaction with other components present in bowel cells, such as cellular membranes, lipids, and carbohydrates.
