2',3',4'-Trihydroxychalcone is a hydrophobic flavonoid that undergoes a number of chemical reactions. It is an inhibitor of the enzyme aurone synthase, which catalyzes the first step in the biosynthesis of chalcones. 2',3',4'-Trihydroxychalcone has also been shown to be active against other enzymes involved in the synthesis of flavonoids, such as chalcone synthase and chalcone reductase. 2',3',4'-Trihydroxychalcone has been shown to be chemically reactive, with a high activity for inhibition of these enzymes.
2',3',4'-Trihydroxychalcone is synthesized by reacting 4-methoxybenzaldehyde with 3,5-dihydroxyacetophenone followed by hydrolysis and decarboxylation. The synthesis has been validated experimentally and is synthetically accessible.
