5,6,7-Trimethoxyflavone is a natural product that inhibits the replication of picornaviruses and herpes simplex viruses. It is a potent inhibitor of protein synthesis, with an IC50 value of 1 μM. 5,6,7-Trimethoxyflavone has been shown to be cytotoxic against certain cancer cells in vitro, including cervical cancer cells. The mechanism for this cytotoxicity is not yet known but may involve inhibition of fatty acid metabolism and the production inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α).
