2,4,4'-Trimethoxychalcone is an aromatic compound that has a variable cyclic structure and is a flavonoid glycoside. It is extracted from the flower of the variabilis plant. 2,4,4'-Trimethoxychalcone has been shown to be effective in binding to DNA and inhibiting bacterial growth. This compound can also undergo equilibrium isomerization to form a chalcone with a 2-hydroxychalcone group. The methoxyl group on the 2-hydroxychalcone can be demethylated by methyltransferase enzymes in bacteria to form the flavylium ion.
