1,3,5-Triacetylbenzene is a triacetate of benzene. It is an antimicrobial agent that has been shown to be active against bacteria and fungi. The mechanism of action involves the nucleophilic attack of an enolate on chloride with ethyl formate as a reaction intermediate. This reaction leads to the formation of methyl ketones, which are crosslinkers for proteins, and model studies have shown that this compound can react with DNA. 1,3,5-Triacetylbenzene has been shown to inhibit the growth of some bacteria and fungi in culture.
