Tuftsin is a peptide hormone that acts as a neuromuscular stimulant. Tuftsin stimulates the release of acetylcholine from nerve endings, which increases the excitability of skeletal muscle. Tuftsin can also increase the motility of the gastrointestinal tract and has been used to treat bowel disease. Tuftsin is an octapeptide with an amino acid sequence that is identical to the sequence of norepinephrine. It activates neuronal cells by binding to specific receptors on cell membranes and inducing neuronal death. The biological properties of tuftsin have been studied in analytical methods such as human polymorphonuclear leukocytes and human serum.
