Tea polyphenols are natural compounds found in tea leaves. They exhibit significant cytotoxicity against a number of cancer cells, which is due to their ability to inhibit complex enzymes, such as matrix metalloproteinases and proteases. Tea polyphenols have also been shown to inhibit the activities of a number of different enzymes, including catechins (epigallocatechin-3-gallate), which may be responsible for their antioxidant properties. This inhibition has been associated with an increased energy metabolism, leading to weight loss in preadipocytes and improved lipid profile in mice. Tea polyphenols may also have receptor activity that inhibits neuronal death and reduces inflammation in the brain.
