Trans-permethrin is a chemical pesticide that belongs to the class of pyrethroid insecticides. It inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, thereby preventing transcription and replication. Trans-permethrin has been shown to be toxic in several animal studies, which may be due to inhibition of enzymes involved in fatty acid synthesis. This compound also has been shown to inhibit the activity of P-glycoprotein, an efflux pump that removes a variety of molecules from cells. Trans-permethrin is used as a model system for toxicity studies because it is not very toxic to humans and its metabolic profile can be easily measured.
