2-(Trifluoromethyl)benzophenone is a photochromic substance that reacts with uv light. It undergoes a reversible conversion from the less-colored form (meso form) to the more-colored form (racemic form). This conversion can be reversed by irradiation with light of an appropriate wavelength. The meso form is colorless, and has a melting point of -92°C. The racemic form is orange, and has a melting point of -20°C. 2-(Trifluoromethyl)benzophenone was synthesized in 1839 by Wolcott Gibbs, who observed its photochromic properties when he irradiated it with sunlight.
