Fluorouracil is a nucleoside analog that inhibits DNA synthesis by competing with natural substrates for incorporation into DNA. Fluorouracil also inhibits RNA synthesis by inhibiting the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase. This drug has antiviral properties and can be used to treat herpes simplex virus infections.
