2,2,2-Trifluoroacetyl chloride is a model system for studying the conformational properties of acyl chlorides. It reacts with hydrogen fluoride to form an alkanoic acid, which can then be used as a substrate for studying the reaction mechanism of fatty acid chlorinating. Trifluoroacetyl chloride and trifluoroacetic acid are also used as model systems in studies of long-term toxicity and chemical stability. 2,2,2-Trifluoroacetyl chloride is not toxic in rats at doses up to 5 g/kg body weight when administered by gavage. The most common side effects are skin irritation and allergic reactions.
