3-Ureidopropionic acid is a metabolite of the fatty acid, 3-hydroxypropanoic acid. It is part of the urea cycle and is produced by the enzyme arginase. 3-Ureidopropionic acid can be used to diagnose metabolic disorders such as fatty acid oxidation disorders or mitochondrial disorders, which are characterized by an increase in energy metabolism. In addition, it can be used to diagnose infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, which is characterized by a decrease in energy metabolism. The measurement of 3-ureidopropionic acid in biological samples can be used for diagnosis and surveillance of disease activity. This metabolite has been shown to exist at higher concentrations than uridine in humans.
