- Urocaninic acid
Urocanic acid is a metabolite of the amino acid tryptophan. It is found in human urine and has been shown to have high affinity for proteins and nucleic acids, which may be due to its basic structure. Urocanic acid has been shown to have an antiviral effect against picolinic acid-induced herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection in mice. The antiviral effect of urocanic acid is thought to be due to its ability to inhibit HSV-1 DNA polymerase activity and deplete cellular thiocyanate levels. Urocanic acid can also inhibit the growth of cells infected with wild-type strains of human papillomavirus (HPV).
