Verbenone is a terpene with a chemical formula of C10H16O. It is the major component of the oil from the leaves of many plants, such as the verbena plant. Verbenone has been shown to have antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, as well as being carcinogenic in rats. The drug has been used to treat infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis and malaria, and has also been used in combination preparations for other types of infections. Verbenone has also been studied for potential treatment of autoimmune diseases and solid phase microextraction methods have been developed to extract verbenone from natural sources. This compound inhibits protein synthesis by binding to ribosomes at the 50S subunit level. Verbenone binds to RNA-dependent DNA polymerase (RNAP) with high affinity at a site that overlaps with RNAP's active site. This binding prevents RNAP from synthesizing DNA chains and thus halts transcriptional processes, leading to cell death by inhib
