9-Vinyl Carbazole is a polymerizable monomer that can be used for the production of polymeric materials. It has been shown to have antimicrobial properties when exposed to light and can be used in the development of light activated antimicrobial agents. 9-Vinyl Carbazole has also been shown to be cytotoxic in cells, with significant cell death being observed at very low concentrations. This compound has been shown to have a high degree of transport properties and can be used as a cationic surfactant. 9-Vinyl Carbazole is also known as methyl ethyl carbazole or MEC, which undergoes an electrophilic addition reaction mechanism. The molecule has an electron withdrawing group on the ring that reacts with a nucleophile, such as trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), yielding an electron-rich aromatic ring that undergoes cationic polymerization reactions. This reaction is catalyzed by a cationic surfact
