Vicriviroc malate is a chemokine receptor antagonist that is used to treat and prevent cancer. Vicriviroc malate inhibits the activity of the CXCR3 chemokine receptor, which may play a role in tumor cell recruitment and metastasis. It has been shown that vicriviroc malate can inhibit the growth of oesophageal cancer cells in vitro and in vivo, as well as metaplastic stomach cells in vitro. This drug also has potential for use as a viable treatment for Barrett's esophagus with metaplastic changes.
Vicriviroc malate binds to chemokine receptors on T-cells and macrophages, preventing activation of these cells by chemokines. The binding prevents chemotaxis of T-cells and macrophages to sites where they are required, such as at sites of inflammation or infection.
