Valeronitrile is an alkanoic acid that has been found to be produced by bacteria from the Brassica genus. It is a proximal tubule toxicant, which causes acute renal failure and death in rats. Valeronitrile reacts with sodium carbonate to form hydrochloric acid and sodium valerate. The reaction solution was shown to have a pH of 4.5-5.5, which is optimal for growth of the bacterium. Valeronitrile also binds to the bacterial cytochrome P450 enzyme and inhibits its activity, leading to a decrease in rRNA synthesis and protein synthesis. This leads to cell death as a result of oxidative stress or exposure to chlorine gas or other oxidizing agents.END>
