Product Information
- 5-Hydroxy-2-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-7-methoxychromen-4-one
The active constituent of Velutin, a natural compound found in the flowers of the Carthamus tinctorius plant, is a sesquiterpene lactone. It inhibits cell signaling pathways and has been shown to be cytotoxic against liver cells and cancer cells in tissue culture. Velutin also causes DNA fragmentation and death in cultured human lymphocytes. The main pharmacokinetic properties of Velutin are its low bioavailability and low oral absorption. This is due to its hydroxyl group that makes it poorly soluble in water and hydrochloric acid present in gastric juice. The acetate extract of Velutin does not have this problem and has been shown to have higher bioavailability than the other extract types.
