Verbenone is a phenylpropanoid that has been shown to have antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. In vitro studies have demonstrated that verbenone can inhibit the growth of certain bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Verbenone has also been shown to protect against ischemic brain damage in rats by reducing lipid peroxidation and increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes. The mechanism of this effect may be related to its ability to bind cationic surfactants, which are often used in combination preparations with verbenone.
